Story

We are planning on making a difference by fundraising for a cause that's close to our hearts. Bex is Sam’s 17-year-old sister and Harri & Max’s friend, and she has Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), having been diagnosed when she was just 11. PH causes high blood pressure in the lungs and living with this disease is not easy as Bex has to wear a large, heavy pump at all times which administers medicine through an IV line straight into her main artery. She cannot be disconnected from this pump at any point as she becomes unwell very quickly. The medicine she receives keeps her arteries open allowing the blood to flow around her body as it needs to. Without this continuous infusion, the arteries would start closing up. To describe PH in simple terms, it’s like living your every day life breathing through a straw. As well as her IV medication, Bex takes a cocktail of oral drugs and must always carry an oxygen cylinder as a back-up in case her IV line fails for any reason. We want to find better treatments, or better still, a cure for this horrible disease and that is why we are raising money for the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI).

The PVRI is a charity that brings the best medical professionals in the world together who have an interest in pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary vascular disease (PVD). PVD can be more commonly described as high blood pressure in the lungs. It is a fatal illness, often mis- or undiagnosed, that can affect people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds, including many fit young athletes. It is estimated that over 70 million people in the world suffer from PVD, although this figure was recently challenged by several observations. The PVRI’s vision is to reduce the global burden of pulmonary vascular disease (PVD) within the next two decades. They will achieve this through global collaboration, striving for excellence in clinical care, research and education in PVD.

We are planning on doing the 10K Tough Mudder in order to raise money for the PVRI. Please support our efforts by making a secure online donation and by posting a message of support. Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to our charity of choice. Thanks so much for your support. Sam, Harri, Max & Bex.

Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute

The Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI) is a global membership charity that believes too many people needlessly suffer from pulmonary hypertension - a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. It advocates for pulmonary vascular diseases to be better understood and better resourced worldwide to improve healthcare professionals' understanding of the condition, and in turn, the speed of diagnoses, treatment and care for patients. To enable this, the UK-based charity connects medical and scientific experts, pharma and regulators from across the globe through high-quality and inspirational face-to-face and online events to share cutting-edge research and drug development. Members of different industries across the globe work collaboratively through regional and specialist groups to increase their knowledge and understanding in specifically identified areas of pulmonary vascular disease. All funds raised for the PVRI will go towards furthering research and understanding, particularly in lower-income countries, to improve diagnoses and care for patients.
